Many people imagine that DIY home electrical repairs and installation are complicated but the circuitry is in fact based on simple principles.
For any electrical appliance to work the power must have a complete circuit. The electricity must be able to flow from its source to the appliance and then back to the source along another wire. If the circuit is broken at any point the appliance will stop working. Breaking a circuit and restoring it as required is what a switch is for.
All electrics work on this kind of basic circuit. If there is ever any problem with the electrics you can isolate it and fix it by finding the break in the circuit. There are three types of circuit used in homes; there are details of these in the articles below.
