DIY Plumbing Repair

Before you can carry out a DIY plumbing repair you first need to diagnose the problem. Here are some common plumbing problems and their cures:

Hissing or banging from boiler or pipes

This is caused by overheating and could be caused by a blocked chimney, lime scale build up, faulty thermostat, lack of water in the system or the pump not working.

Radiators in one part of the house don’t warm up

This can be caused by the timer or thermostat not working or not being set properly, the zone valve could be faulty or the pump could be faulty.

Radiators remain cool though boiler is operating normally

Check the pump by listening for motor vibration this could not be working. Adjust the thermostat or timer setting.

Single radiator doesn’t warm up

The valve could be closed, the thermostat radiator valve could be set too low or could be faulty, the valve could be blacked by corrosion.

Area at top of radiator stays cool

There is an airlock at the top of the radiator stopping the water circulating properly. Bleed the radiator.

Cool patch in centre of radiator though top and ends are warm

There is a deposit of rust at the bottom of the radiator restricting circulation. You will need to remove radiator and flush out.

Boiler not working

The thermostat could be set too low, the timer or the program might not be working or if you have a gas boiler the pilot light could be out.
